Temptation

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
1 Corinthians 10:13 · WEB

Being tempted is not the failure. It is the moment before the decision, and you still have it.

If you're feeling this

You know what yours is. You may have been here many times, and the shame of the repetition can be worse than the thing itself.

Start with something the church does not always say clearly: being tempted is not sinning. Jesus was tempted. The temptation was real and it was not a moral failure on his part. The question is only what happens next.

Temptation is also predictable, which is the good news. It has patterns — times of day, moods, places, states of tiredness. That makes it something you can plan against instead of something you hope to survive.

Scripture

Scripture for this moment

Open the one that matches where you are. You don't have to read them all.

When you are tired and exposed
Watch and pray, that you don’t enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Matthew 26:41 · WEB

Said to men who kept falling asleep. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak is a statement of fact, not a rebuke — and it explains why almost everyone is most vulnerable when exhausted.

When you want to understand how it works
But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.

James 1:14-15 · WEB

Drawn away, then enticed, then it conceives, then it acts. There is a sequence, which means there are earlier points to intervene than the last one.

When the right answer is to leave
She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside.

Genesis 39:12 · WEB

Joseph does not stay and win the argument. He leaves his coat behind and runs, and it costs him. Sometimes the spiritual response is physically walking out of a room.

When you feel disqualified
For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.

Hebrews 4:15 · WEB

Tempted in all points like we are. Whatever you are facing, you are not explaining it to someone who has no idea what the pull feels like.

When you keep ending up here
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, for its lusts.

Romans 13:14 · WEB

Make no provision for the flesh. The work is in what you set up in advance — the app deleted, the route changed, the account closed — not in the willpower you hope to have at midnight.

Practical

What can I do right now?

Start with the first one. If that's all you manage today, that counts.

  1. Leave. Physically.

Change rooms, go outside, get in the car. Distance is more effective than resolve, and it works when resolve does not.

  2. Know your pattern

When does it happen? Tired, alone, late, after conflict, after a drink? Write it down. Almost nobody is tempted at random.

  3. Remove the access in advance

Delete it, block it, hand over the password, change the route home. Decide it now, when you are clear-headed, not in the moment when you will not be.

  4. Have one person you text

Before, not after. A message that says only "struggling tonight" does more than an hour of trying to white-knuckle it.

  5. Do not be alone when the risk is highest

If you know it is Friday evenings, put something in Friday evenings. Isolation is where nearly all of this happens.

  6. Look at what it is offering

Comfort, escape, control, being wanted? Temptation usually promises something real. Working out what it is helps you meet the need somewhere it will not cost you.

  7. Get proper help if it is compulsive

If you have tried repeatedly and cannot stop, that is not a willpower problem and it will not yield to more effort. A recovery group or a counsellor is the right next step.

Support

You don't have to face this alone

Almost nobody beats a persistent temptation privately. The single strongest predictor of change is another person who knows and is allowed to ask.

Community and support groups

These organisations are independent of Boro Collective. We list them because they do this work well, not because we are connected to them.

Community

Find community near you

Faith and practical help are not competing ideas. A church, a counsellor and a support group can all be part of the same week.

Looking for something besides a church?

We don't keep our own directory, so this opens a map search you can scan yourself. We would rather send you somewhere real than list a church we cannot vouch for.

Foundations

Build your foundation

No one of these carries a life on its own. They hold together.

  • Community

Not an audience — a handful of people who would notice if you went quiet for a fortnight. Most of us have to build that on purpose.

  • Faith

Honest prayer counts more than eloquent prayer. Scripture read slowly counts more than Scripture read fast. A pastor who knows your name is worth more than any of it.

  • Purpose

Having something that needs you tomorrow is its own kind of anchor. It does not have to be large.

  • Physical health

Almost every emotion is louder on no sleep and an empty stomach. This is not the whole answer, and it is never nothing.

  • Professional support

Seeing a counsellor is not a failure of faith any more than seeing a doctor about a broken arm is. Some things need a trained person.

You are not alone.

Being tempted does not make you a hypocrite. It makes you a person, and it happened to Christ.

Do one thing now, while it is quiet: pick the person you will text, and remove one point of access before you need to.
