Rejection
When my father and my mother forsake me, then Yahweh will take me up.
What they decided about you is not the same as what is true about you.
If you're feeling this
Scripture
Scripture for this moment
Open the one that matches where you are. You don't have to read them all.
When you feel unwanted
He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him.
John 1:11 · WEB
He came to his own, and those who were his own did not receive him. Christ knows rejection from the inside, and not the mild kind.
When you have been passed over
He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.
Isaiah 53:3 · WEB
Despised and rejected by men. This is the passage the church reads about Jesus. Being unchosen is not evidence that God is against you.
When you were judged on the outside
But Yahweh said to Samuel, “Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7 · WEB
Samuel gets it wrong looking at the impressive brother. Human assessment is unreliable, including the assessment that just went against you.
When you need to know where you belong
having predestined us for adoption as children through Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire,
Ephesians 1:5 · WEB
Adopted — chosen deliberately rather than acquired by accident. The language throughout that passage is of being wanted on purpose.
When you need hope
The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
Psalm 118:22 · WEB
The stone the builders rejected became the cornerstone. Rejection by the people doing the choosing turned out not to be the final word on where that stone belonged.
Practical
What can I do right now?
Start with the first one. If that's all you manage today, that counts.
-
Say what happened out loud, once
To one person. Rejection told to someone else shrinks; rejection rehearsed internally grows and gains detail that was never there.
-
Separate the event from the verdict
Write two lines: what actually happened, and what you concluded about yourself. The second is almost always bigger than the first supports.
-
Do not go looking for the reasons
Re-reading messages, checking their profile, replaying the conversation. It feels like understanding and it functions as self-harm.
-
Go where you are already wanted
Rejection makes you withdraw from everyone, including the people who have never rejected you. Contact one of them this week.
-
Keep doing the thing
If it was a job, apply again. If it was a church, try another. The instinct to stop asking is the expensive part of rejection.
-
Watch for the old pattern
If this landed harder than it should have, it may be connected to something much older. That is worth noticing and worth talking about.
-
See a counsellor if it has become identity
If you have started assuming you will be rejected and behaving accordingly, that is a pattern worth breaking with help.
Support
You don't have to face this alone
If you need help right now

Organisations that specialise in this
-
The Trevor Project
Crisis support for LGBTQ young people under 25, 24/7, by phone, chat or text.
These organisations are independent of Boro Collective. We list them because they do this work well, not because we are connected to them.
Community
Find community near you
Faith and practical help are not competing ideas. A church, a counsellor and a support group can all be part of the same week.
We don't keep our own directory, so this opens a map search you can scan yourself. We would rather send you somewhere real than list a church we cannot vouch for.
Foundations
Build your foundation
No one of these carries a life on its own. They hold together.
-
Community
Not an audience — a handful of people who would notice if you went quiet for a fortnight. Most of us have to build that on purpose.
-
Faith
Honest prayer counts more than eloquent prayer. Scripture read slowly counts more than Scripture read fast. A pastor who knows your name is worth more than any of it.
-
Purpose
Having something that needs you tomorrow is its own kind of anchor. It does not have to be large.
-
Professional support
Seeing a counsellor is not a failure of faith any more than seeing a doctor about a broken arm is. Some things need a trained person.
-
Physical health
Almost every emotion is louder on no sleep and an empty stomach. This is not the whole answer, and it is never nothing.
