Depression

Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God.
Psalm 42:11 · WEB

This is not a faith problem, and treating it is not giving up on God.

If you're feeling this

Depression is not sadness turned up. Sadness is about something. Depression can arrive with nothing attached, take away your interest in things you love, and make ordinary tasks feel physically heavy.

It has been treated badly in some churches. If you have been told this is a spiritual problem, or that a stronger believer would not be here, that was wrong. Depression is an illness with physical, chemical, circumstantial and spiritual dimensions at once, and treating any of them is not abandoning the others.

Prayer matters here. So does a doctor. Those have never been competing options.

Scripture

Scripture for this moment

Open the one that matches where you are. You don't have to read them all.

When you cannot do anything at all
He lay down and slept under a juniper tree; and behold, an angel touched him, and said to him, “Arise and eat!” He looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on the coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. Yahweh’s angel came again the second time, and touched him, and said, “Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you.”

1 Kings 19:5-7 · WEB

Elijah, straight after his greatest victory, asks to die. God's first response is not a sermon. It is sleep, then food, then sleep and food again — and only after that a conversation. The physical came first. That is in the text.

When nothing lifts
You have put lover and friend far from me, and my friends into darkness.

Psalm 88:18 · WEB

Psalm 88 is the one that does not end well. The last word is darkness. It is in Scripture precisely so that someone in this state is not left without a prayer that matches.

When it is slow
I waited patiently for Yahweh. He turned to me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

Psalm 40:1-2 · WEB

I waited patiently. The rescue in this psalm is real and it is not instant. Recovery from depression is usually gradual enough that you only notice it looking back.

When you only need to reach tomorrow
It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Lamentations 3:22-23 · WEB

New every morning. Not new every year — the unit is one day, which is the right size when a week is unimaginable.

When you are in the middle of it
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 · WEB

Through the valley, not around it. The promise is company on the way through rather than an exit ramp, and for once that is the more useful promise.

Practical

What can I do right now?

Start with the first one. If that's all you manage today, that counts.

  1. Talk to a doctor

Start here. Depression is treatable, treatment works, and a GP appointment is a reasonable first step rather than a last resort.

  2. Tell one person how bad it actually is

Not the managed version. Depression is very good at hiding, and it does its worst work in private.

  3. Do one thing, then stop

A shower. One walk to the end of the road. When everything is heavy, the trick is to lower the bar until something is reachable, then actually reach it.

  4. Get daylight early

Twenty minutes outside in the morning. Small, well-evidenced, and free. Not a cure — a lever that genuinely moves.

  5. Eat and sleep on a schedule

Depression wrecks both, and wrecked sleep deepens depression. Regular times, even when they do not feel earned.

  6. Keep one connection alive

One person, one group, one standing appointment. Withdrawal is the symptom that makes every other symptom worse.

  7. Do not stop medication on your own

If you are taking something and want to come off it, that is a conversation with your prescriber. Stopping suddenly can be genuinely dangerous.

Support

You don't have to face this alone

You need more than one kind of help here, and that is normal rather than a sign anything has failed. A doctor, a counsellor, a church and a friend are doing four different jobs.

If you need help right now

Professional support

Church and pastoral support

Community and support groups

Organisations that specialise in this

These organisations are independent of Boro Collective. We list them because they do this work well, not because we are connected to them.

Community

Find community near you

Faith and practical help are not competing ideas. A church, a counsellor and a support group can all be part of the same week.

Looking for something besides a church?

We don't keep our own directory, so this opens a map search you can scan yourself. We would rather send you somewhere real than list a church we cannot vouch for.

Foundations

Build your foundation

No one of these carries a life on its own. They hold together.

  • Professional support

Seeing a counsellor is not a failure of faith any more than seeing a doctor about a broken arm is. Some things need a trained person.

  • Community

Not an audience — a handful of people who would notice if you went quiet for a fortnight. Most of us have to build that on purpose.

  • Physical health

Almost every emotion is louder on no sleep and an empty stomach. This is not the whole answer, and it is never nothing.

  • Faith

Honest prayer counts more than eloquent prayer. Scripture read slowly counts more than Scripture read fast. A pastor who knows your name is worth more than any of it.

  • Purpose

Having something that needs you tomorrow is its own kind of anchor. It does not have to be large.

You are not alone.

Depression is not a verdict on your faith. People who loved God deeply have been exactly here, and some of them wrote parts of the Bible from inside it.

See a doctor. Tell one person the truth. Get through today — that is enough of a plan.
