Addiction

If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.
John 8:36 · WEB

You have probably tried to stop on your own. That is not the same as having tried everything.

If you're feeling this

You may have promised yourself this was the last time more often than you can count, and the gap between what you intend in the morning and what you do by evening is its own kind of despair.

Something has to be said plainly: prayer is not a substitute for treatment. Addiction changes how the brain works, and expecting willpower and faith alone to reverse that is like praying about a broken leg and refusing the cast. God is not absent from medicine and recovery rooms. He is very often in them.

Recovery is real, it happens to people who thought it would not, and relapse is part of many people's road rather than proof that it was never working.

Scripture

Scripture for this moment

Open the one that matches where you are. You don't have to read them all.

When you do what you do not want to do
For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing. For desire is present with me, but I don’t find it doing that which is good. For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

Romans 7:18-19 · WEB

Paul describing exactly the gap between intention and action, in Scripture, without resolution in that verse. If you have thought you were uniquely broken for this, you are reading a saint say the same thing.

When you need out
He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

Psalm 40:2 · WEB

Out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay — then feet set on a rock and steps made firm. Note the order: rescue first, stability afterwards. Stability is a result, not the entry requirement.

When you need to say it out loud
Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

James 5:16 · WEB

Confess to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. Healing here is explicitly connected to other people knowing. Secrecy is part of the illness.

When you have relapsed
Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted.

Galatians 6:1 · WEB

Restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness. That is the instruction to the church about you. If you have been treated otherwise, that was not this.

When you need hope
“Don’t remember the former things, and don’t consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

Isaiah 43:18-19 · WEB

I will make a way in the wilderness. Written to people whose situation had gone on a long time and who had every reason to have stopped expecting anything.

Practical

What can I do right now?

Start with the first one. If that's all you manage today, that counts.

  1. Call SAMHSA today

1-800-662-4357. Free, confidential, 24/7, and they will find treatment near you at what you can pay. One call is a complete first step.

  2. Do not detox alone from alcohol or benzodiazepines

Withdrawal from these can kill. If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before you stop — this one is genuinely medical.

  3. Go to one meeting this week

AA, NA, Celebrate Recovery. Free, no sign-up, and you do not have to speak. Going once commits you to nothing.

  4. Tell one person the actual amount

Not the version you have been giving. Recovery starts at the point the real number is said out loud to someone.

  5. Get it out of the house

All of it, today, while you want to. The version of you at 11pm will not do this.

  6. Change what surrounds it

The people, the route, the bar, the app. Nearly nobody recovers while everything else stays identical.

  7. If you relapse, go back the next day

Not next month, when you feel less ashamed. Relapse is common and it is not the end of recovery — the delay afterwards is what does the damage.

Support

You don't have to face this alone

Everything below is free or low-cost, and none of it requires you to have stopped first. Church recovery ministries and clinical treatment are not alternatives to each other — most people who get well use both.

If you need help right now

Professional support

Church and pastoral support

Community and support groups

These organisations are independent of Boro Collective. We list them because they do this work well, not because we are connected to them.

Community

Find community near you

Faith and practical help are not competing ideas. A church, a counsellor and a support group can all be part of the same week.

Looking for something besides a church?

We don't keep our own directory, so this opens a map search you can scan yourself. We would rather send you somewhere real than list a church we cannot vouch for.

Foundations

Build your foundation

No one of these carries a life on its own. They hold together.

  • Professional support

Seeing a counsellor is not a failure of faith any more than seeing a doctor about a broken arm is. Some things need a trained person.

  • Community

Not an audience — a handful of people who would notice if you went quiet for a fortnight. Most of us have to build that on purpose.

  • Faith

Honest prayer counts more than eloquent prayer. Scripture read slowly counts more than Scripture read fast. A pastor who knows your name is worth more than any of it.

  • Physical health

Almost every emotion is louder on no sleep and an empty stomach. This is not the whole answer, and it is never nothing.

  • Purpose

Having something that needs you tomorrow is its own kind of anchor. It does not have to be large.

You are not alone.

People do get free of this. Not by trying harder alone — by getting treatment, getting into a room with others, and letting people know the truth.

Make one call today. SAMHSA will do the finding for you, and it costs nothing.
